In 2014, the CMU community celebrated not only Earth Day, but a whole week of engaging events both on- and off-campus. Thanks to all of the sponsors, volunteers and attendees who made the event a great success!

e-Waste Collection

Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center (Bovee University Center)

Bring your old electronics, printers and other items powered by a cord to the Volunteer Center to be properly recycled by the Isabella County Recycling Center.

 

MONDAY, April 21

Make Your Own T-shirt, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.*

Lawn outside Bovee University Center

Learn the process of printmaking by creating your own T-shirt using a variety of fun, eco-themed designs. *Recycled-fiber T-shirts are free while supplies last. Or feel free to bring your own item to decorate!

 

"Don't be Trashy" Art Competition & Voting, 7-8 p.m.

Park Library Hallway

Competing groups and individuals show off art constructed using recycled, upcycled, reused and salvaged materials, while you vote for your favorite. After all, one person's trash is another's treasure!

ECO Talks, 8-9:30 p.m.

Park Library Auditorium

Hear from local community members about sustainability-related topics in this TEDx-style program. ECO Talks features a variety of performances including poems from Word Hammer and music performances from local musicians.

TUESDAY, April 22 (EARTH DAY)

Earth Day Garden Party, 6-9 p.m.

Campus GROW Garden, near Theunissen Stadium (CMU baseball diamond) and parking lot 70

Celebrate Earth Day at this rockin', grassroots garden party beginning 6 p.m. in the CMU Campus Garden. The event boasts live music from Kavazabava and Moses, hula hooping and other performances from CMU Circus Club and samples from local food vendors.

 

Tree Love Tuesdays: Earth Day Celebration, 10 p.m.

Bombay Grill (formerly L-1)

Continue the Earth Day celebration after the Tree Love Collective and friends while listening to live bands and DJs, as well as enjoying local art.

 

WEDNESDAY, April 23

"Reel Paddling Film Festival" Screening, 6 p.m.

Park Library Auditorium

This screening of awe-inspiring paddling films showcases the natural beauty of our water resources. Watch, enjoy and get inspired to explore rivers, lakes and oceans, push your physical and emotional limits, embrace an environmentally-friendly lifestyle and appreciate the heritage of the wild and wonderful places we have to paddle.

 

"American Meat" Film Screening, 8 p.m.

Mackinaw Room (Bovee University Center)

Experience "American Meat," a documentary examining modern chicken, cattle and hog production in the United States. The film will be followed by an open discussion facilitated by representatives of GreenTree Cooperative Grocery, Graham's Organic Meats, and GCC Organics.

 

THURSDAY, April 24

"Home" Film Screening, 1 p.m.

Student Lounge (Bovee University Center)

Hang out on the bright orange couches in the UC as the Mary E. Brandell Volunteer Center presents "Home," a visually stunning documentary about Earth featuring aerial footage from 54 countries. You'll get a bird's eye view of our world's natural resources and see the importance of protecting them. Guaranteed to take your breath away, or we'll refund the cost of admission (it's free).

 

Brew Planet, 8 p.m.

Mountain Town Brewing Company, 614 W. Pickard St., Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858

Challenge your friends in a game of Eco-trivia sponsored by Take Back the Tap and GreenTree Co-op -- and the winner takes home a $30 GreenTree gift card, as well as some sweet swag from Take Back the Tap! While you're there, groove to some live music from Mt. Pleasant's own Balkan-Klezmer Gypsy Band, Kavazabava, wander a local art and photography exhibit in the brewing room, enjoy Mt. Pleasant Brewing Company's award-winning craft beers and taste all the delicious foods available at this local business. And for the icing on the cake, Mt. FRIDAY, April 25

Isabella County Parks & Recreation volunteer project, Noon-3:30 p.m.

Meet at Mary A. Brandell Volunteer Center at noon for free transportation to volunteer site

Get some fresh air while helping maintain our local parks! Service Ambassadors will be sending 12 students (who sign up in advance at https://orgsync.com/26702/chapter) to volunteer at Isabella County parks. Complimentary lunch and a free t-shirt will be provided for each volunteer.

 

Isabella County Recycling Center volunteer cleanup & facility tour, 12:30-3 p.m.
Meeting location to be determined. Volunteers will carpool to site. Contact

Another great outdoor volunteer opportunity with a bonus: a free tour of the recycling center! Help clean up the grounds and then learn all about how the county processes recyclable items. Take Back the Tap Fights Back: Day of Action, 2 p.m.

Meet at Rose Pond, outside the Student Activity Center

Help spread the word: refills, not landfills! Students are invited to sign a letter of support for Take Back the Tap's initiative to ban the sale of bottled water on campus, and then join the group in marching across campus to deliver the letters to CMU administrators.
